How to Send a WhatsApp Broadcast Message

Quick answer

A WhatsApp broadcast sends one message to many contacts individually, so each reply comes back as a private chat. In the WhatsApp Business app a broadcast list is capped at 256 contacts, and each recipient must have saved your number. To broadcast to large opted-in segments without those limits, you use approved templates on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

What a broadcast is (and is not)

A broadcast is not a group. Each person receives your message privately and replies to you one to one, without seeing anyone else. It is the right tool for sending an update or offer to many customers at once.

Broadcast in the WhatsApp Business app

  1. 1

Open WhatsApp Business and tap the menu, then New broadcast.

  2. 2

Select up to 256 contacts who have saved your number.

  3. 3

Type your message and send. Each recipient gets it privately.

The two big limits: a hard cap of 256, and recipients must have your number saved or they will not receive it.

Broadcast at scale on the WhatsApp Business Platform

  1. 1

Connect your number to the WhatsApp Business Platform through a provider such as ZeniaOne.

  2. 2

Import opted-in contacts and split them into segments.

  3. 3

Create a message template and get it approved by Meta.

  4. 4

Send the broadcast to a segment and track delivery, reads and replies.

Recipients do not need to save your number, and you can message far more than 256 people, as long as they opted in.

Frequently asked questions

How many contacts can a WhatsApp broadcast reach?

A WhatsApp Business app broadcast list is capped at 256 contacts. On the WhatsApp Business Platform you can reach much larger opted-in audiences, within your number's messaging limits.

Do people know they got a broadcast?

Recipients see a normal one-to-one message and reply privately. They are not told it went to a list, and they do not see other recipients.

Why did my broadcast not deliver?

In the app, recipients must have saved your number. If they have not, they will not receive the broadcast. The WhatsApp Business Platform does not have this requirement for opted-in contacts.
